Our Story
Sydney Metro Decking was born from a simple idea: build better, do right by people, and take pride in every job.
Back in the early 2010s, Chris, a Shire local and talented tradie, saw the worst side of the building industry. Dodgy shortcuts, underpaid workers, no care for clients or crews. So, he decided to flip the script.
Starting out by helping family and friends with decks and backyard upgrades, Chris found the work rewarding. It looked great, added value, and brought families together outdoors.
By 2015, with a ute full of gear and zero business experience, he launched Sydney Metro Decking. What he did have was an eye for detail, a knack for listening to clients, and a commitment to doing things properly.
Within a year, he hired his first full-time team member and trained him up the “SMD way.” Fast forward to today and the crew includes a bunch of full-time legends plus a strong network of trusted contractors and suppliers, many of them mates, all committed to building outdoor spaces the right way.
What started with decks and screens has grown into full backyard makeovers with pergolas, patios, stairs, balustrades, carports and pool zones. The jobs may have gotten bigger, but the hands-on approach hasn’t changed: no conveyor belt builds, no churn-and-burn. Just high-quality outdoor spaces built with care.
The Team Behind The Tools
Led by Chris, the SMD crew shares the same down-to-earth but detail-focused approach. Ask Chris about his favourite tool and it’s anything Dewalt. Catch him on the weekend and he’s likely smoking brisket for friends. Those quirks carry through to the team culture: serious about craftsmanship, but always approachable.
What sets us apart is the way we approach every job: the right materials for the right outcome, even if it means losing a quote to someone cutting corners. We’ve built our reputation on doing things properly, from low-clearance subframes with H4 timber to choosing decking boards we know and trust, like Ekodeck, merbau and spotted gum.
Add in a love of great food, sports, and the odd laugh about client quirks (yes, we’ve had a BYO toilet paper request), and you’ll see why working with us feels less like hiring a builder and more like teaming up with people who care.
